SCOREBOARD: Simply an amazing year for SPC's Mayers

It's almost unfathomable to consider the magnitude of the athletic year enjoyed by St. Peter's College junior Sean Mayers. Quite frankly, it has to go down as one of the most diverse and certainly most successful years that a local college athlete has ever accomplished.

Try putting these gems of brilliance together for a second.

Last fall, while playing for the St. Peter's College football team, Mayers was the No. 2 rusher in the entire nation for NCAA Division I-AA schools. He ran for a total of 1,546 yards (154.6 per game), playing for the Peacocks, who weren't exactly world beaters. The next leading rusher on the 3-7 Peacocks had a grand total of 81 yards. Which means it wasn't exactly like the Peacocks were spreading the carries around. Mayers was the entire offensive package.

In the spring, Mayers, a native of Marlton, N.J. in the southern part of the state, turned his attentions towards track and field and once again, had moments of brilliance never before enjoyed by an SPC athlete.

First, Mayers was part of the Peacocks' 1600-meter relay team that won the school's first-ever gold medal at the prestigious Penn Relays. Along with teammates Mark Anderson, Roman Zhnurenka and Carl Cowart, Mayers ran a school-record 3:16.87, taking a gold medal at Franklin Field in Philadelphia. Mayers ran his 400-meter split in an impressive 48.75, moving the Peacocks from fifth to second in the race.

Then, a week later, Mayers won a gold medal in the long jump at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships at Rider University, setting a new MAAC and school record in the process.

Mayers made a successful jump of 7.37 meters (translates to 24 feet, two inches), breaking the old mark of 22-10 set four years ago by Manhattan's Magnus Ahlen. His leap qualified Mayers for this weekend's NCAA Championships, which will be held at Randall's Island in New York.

Mayers also finished third in the 100-meter dash at the MAAC championships, breaking another school mark of 10.87 seconds.

When you put it all together, it becomes one of the most brilliant campaigns ever _ easily the most diverse athletic year ever enjoyed by an athlete at Harvard on the Boulevard.

Mayers said that he hasn't truly appreciated the magnitude of the accomplishments and the diversity of his achievements.

"I honestly don't know," Mayers said. "I never really thought of stuff like that. My mother keeps telling me how incredible it is, but it really hasn't hit me. I'm just not that kind of person. I guess I'm pretty fortunate to have the kind of success I've had this year, setting school records in football and track. I know what I can do and I'm not surprised in what I can do, especially with the amount of work I put into it."

Three years ago, when Mayers was a senior at Cherokee High School, he was being recruited by a few schools for football. When he received a call from the coaching staff at St. Peter's College, he had no idea where it was.

"I never heard of it, but that made it better, because I wanted to go to a place that I didn't think was well known," Mayers said. "I like being the underdog and surprise people."

While he was recruited for football, Mayers received a track scholarship to SPC, knowing full well that he would have to compete in both sports _ a total rarity among NCAA Division I athletics.

Mayers said that he's been playing organized football _ "since I was in kindergarten," Mayers said _ and that he took up running track in fifth grade. For that reason alone, he thinks of himself more as a football player.

"I also think I'm a better football player," Mayers admits.

Although after this spring's performance, that argument may be up for debate.

Mayers, who will graduate next year with a degree in business management, said that he's looking forward to the NCAA Championships this weekend for two reasons. One, because he wants to compete one last time in his brilliant season. But the other is for more selfish reasons.

"I'm the lone person on the team going, so I want to do well, but I'm more anxious to get it over with, because I need a break," Mayers laughed. "It's been a long year. I need some time off, then I can concentrate on football again."

Mayers said that he was surprised to be ranked among the nation's rushing leaders.

"As the season was going on, I really didn't pay much attention to it, until someone told me about it," Mayers said. "Then, I really wanted to lead the nation. I figured I was close and wanted to do it. So I looked to see where I stood after every game. When I finished second, I was a little disappointed. I now have something to shoot for next year."

Remarkably, it means that little SPC has two juniors who ranked among the nation's best _ Keydren "Kee-Kee" Clark, the nation's leading basketball scorer and Mayers, the grid rushing leader.

"I know him," Mayers said of Clark. "I had a class with him. It's kind of funny if we're spotted together, people say, `There goes the two superstars from St. Peter's.' It's pretty amazing we're both in the same school."

Mayers said that he was surprised to be able to break the league record in the long jump two weeks ago because the conditions at Rider weren't exactly perfect.

"I didn't think I had a shot at the record, because the pit at Rider wasn't good," Mayers said. "But I was really hoping to win the event, because I took second last year and was second indoors. It just all came together for me."

Even after some poking and prodding from a reporter, Mayers still wouldn't budge and admit that he had a special year. All he wanted to talk about was the future and what he didn't accomplish.

"Every time I go into the football office, I see plaques that prior St. Peter's teams did in being No. 1 in the nation," Mayers said. "They were No. 1 in defense and No. 1 in sacks. I see those plaques and I want to be No. 1 myself. That's what I'm shooting for. I also want to beat Duquesne this year as well. We never beat them. So I'm raising the bar higher."

SEAN MAYERS LEADS SAINT PETER'S AT MAAC OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

LAWRENCEVILLE (May 1 and 2)--Sophomore Sean Mayers was the biggest individual scorer for Saint Peter's College this weekend at the annual Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field championships hosted by Rider University.

Mayers (Marlton/Cherokee HS) scored in a variety of events for the Saint Peter's men's team, which placed fourth in a five-team field with 58 points (10 points are awarded for an individual first-place finish; 8 points for a second; six for a third; four for a fourth, two for a fifth and one for a sixth). The Saint Peter's women's team placed sixth in a six-team field with 12 points.

Manhattan won the men's championship with 222 points, while Rider won the women's side, with 266.50 points.

Mayers earned points for Saint Peter's with second-place finishes in the 200-meter dash (22.14) and the long jump (6.88 m). He was third in the 100-meter dash (11.14). In addition to Mayers' 22 individual points, the Peacocks also got a third-place in the triple jump (14.03 m) from junior Brandon Edmonds (Nyack, NY/Spring Valley HS).
